More Brits 'relying' on inheritance

For many people, inheriting money is their only chance of getting on the property ladder or helping to pay for their child's education.

New research, however, claims that many people are putting their life on hold for an inheritance payout that may never come.

According to engage Mutual Assurance, almost one in four (23 per cent) people say they would be able to pay off their mortgage with the help of inheritance, while on in ten people dismiss the idea of owning their own home without using inherited funds.

The findings come at a time when households are spending almost a third of their disposable income on essential purchases, according to the Times.

Previous research also found that over half (54 per cent) of those passed the retirement age are struggling to make ends meet. In 2007, 7,900 pensioners were declared bankrupt, reports the BBC.
