Following advice proffered in an issue of Stock Advisor magazine, the professor of biochemistry was inspired to invest some of his money in Marvel, the company behind such superhero creations as Iron Man, Spider Man and X-Men.
Initially, Mr Ong purchased a couple of hundred chares in the company in 2002, followed by a further 750 shares over the next two weeks. In total, his investment amounted to $3,500 (£1,790).
According to the Motley Fool website, Mr Ong's investment now stands at $35,000 - leading him to consider retiring from his jobs earlier than planned.
The successful, amateur investor commented: "Some stock ideas just grab your attention - I particularly like the ones that seem misvalued or those that have potential that people don't recognise."
