EDF 'to prepare new British Energy bid'

EDF 'to prepare new British Energy bid'
//
France's major electricity company has announced that it could be prepared to increase its £11 billion bid for British Energy, but only if the board of the UK nuclear group quickly recommends the offer.

EDF - which has a monopoly on French electricity - bid just over 680p a share last month and could go as high as 700p per share if it was confident of succeeding, the Financial Times reports.

However, EDF had been putting in another bid for British Energy's stocks and shares after the board of the UK company said that the bid was too low, given the prevailing share price was 735p.

EDF, which operates all of France's 58 nuclear reactors, is the favourite to buy out the UK government's 35 per cent stake in British Energy and launch a full bid.

Currently, EDF generates around six per cent of the UK's electricity.
