Jobless figures increase at fastest rate 'since 1990'

The number of individuals claiming unemployment benefits has risen at the fastest rate since the recession of the early 1990s, new figures have shown.

According to the data released by the Office for National Statistics, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in July increased by more than 20,000 people, representing the sixth consecutive rise in the figures.

The total number of people now claiming benefits is approximately 864,700, reports the Guardian.

The Labour Force Survey, which is a much broader survey conducted by the International Labour Organisation, found that jobless levels increased by 60,000 in the three months to June - the fourth consecutive rise in the data.

The new figure will fuel concerns of a further economic downturn and a possible recession in the UK.
