Students at university are facing their costliest academic year ever, new research suggests.

According to the first Student Price Index compiled by the Open University, students in England are dealing with an inflation rate 50 per cent higher than the national average.

The true inflation rate for undergraduates in England is nearly seven per cent, while the Consumer Price Index is currently 4.4 per cent.

Overall, living costs for students are rising at 1.5 times the rate of the general population, reports the Press Association.

Alan Shipman, the economist who produced the index, said that inflation affects different socio-economic groups in different ways.

He commented: "In my research, students are certainly experiencing a higher inflationary rate because the cost of what they need to buy is among the highest categories of price rises."
