London mayor to 'cut 100 jobs'
//
The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is to cut 100 "middle management" jobs at the Greater London Authority in an effort to save around £7.5 million by next year.

In addition to the redundancies, Mr Johnson will also outline a restructuring of City Hall in which the number of departments will be reduced from six to four.

The new departments will include finance and operations, communities and development, corporate affairs and environment, reports the Evening Standard.

Since the period 2001-02, the mayor's share of the council tax - or precept - has risen from £122.98 to £309.92.

Other cost-cutting measures implemented by the mayor include axing the authority's free paper and reducing the cost of the recent Olympic trip to Beijing by £1 million.

Mr Johnson, who was elected in May, told the London Assembly: "The people of this city are feeling a serious financial squeeze. It is our job to deliver taxpayer value."
