Shares in the company went up 12 per cent in early trading as the news was announced.
Ian Livingston, BT's Chief Executive, said three out of the group's four business units were delivering on or ahead of targets.
"But profits in BT Global Services are simply not good enough and we are taking decisive action to put matters right," he said, adding: "What we have to do now is translate revenue growth into better profitability."
News of the job cuts comes after gloomy unemployment figures were released yesterday (November 12th).
Firms such as Virgin Media and Yell also announced they would be shedding thousands of jobs.
