More optimistic news about the US economy also helped the FTSE 100 rise to 4189.4.
In the capital, the pace was set by Erasian Natural Resources (ENR) and Kazakhmys, both of which are Kazakh-based mining companies.
ENR, the leading FTSE riser was ENR, added eight per cent to its share prices, while Kazakhmys increased by 15.75p per share.
Also on the up was life and pensions company Aviva which released better than expected business data for 2008, reports the Press Association.
Yesterday (February 3rd), strong figures from Vodafone ensured that the company remained the most traded issue, followed closely by Royal Bank of Scotland.
Among the falls was the London Stock Exchange and Balfour Beatty which fell by 7.24 per cent and 5.95 per cent respectively.
