According to the Observer, the FTSE 100-listed company is to make the cuts in the UK, Europe and the US, a move that could leave some employees searching for new ways to earn extra money.
Around half of that figure have already lost their jobs, with the remainder expected to be made redundant before the end of 2009.
Last month the firm, whose clients include HSBC and Ford, said that it may have to reduce its head-count in order to counterbalance a fall in sales, having experienced a 5.8 per cent reduction in income during the opening three months of the year.
WPP is the latest in a number of FTSE-listed companies to make job cuts following the onset of the economic crisis.
Last week BAE Systems, the aerospace and defence firm, revealed that it is shedding approximately 500 jobs across the UK.
