'Gradual gains' expected for FTSE in 2010

The UK stock market is likely to see steady gains over the coming year, according to one expert.

Director of Churchouse Financial Planning Keith Churchouse suggested that although the significant jumps seen in 2009 are unlikely to be repeated, the coming 12 months will see the FTSE "creep up".

Highlighting investment as a long-term option, he noted that clients do not expect to see quick gains this year.

Instead, with the FTSE 100 having recovered from a large drop to reach a "reasonable level" of 5,000 last year and since climbing to 5,500, the specialist predicted a gradual rise.

"I think people are anticipating that we might see somewhere around five to ten per cent growth in 2010, which would take us up to 6,000," he stated.

Earlier this week, an Investment Management Association study showed that investors are now more confident about the prospects of the market than they were a year ago.
