New research from two industry bodies has suggested the economy in the UK is showing further signs of improvement.

The manufacturers' organisation the EEF and the CBI have both released new data, with findings from the former organisation indicating that there was a larger-than-anticipated increase in production and orders taken over the last three months, helping to improve sentiment among enterprises.

Chief economist at the EEF Lee Hopley said that the start to 2010 has been "better than expected" for companies, news that may be welcomed by those trading shares in UK enterprises on the stock market.

The CBI's data indicated that firms in the services sector have seen stability in their volumes over the past three months and its chief economic adviser Ian McCafferty noted that this is "consistent with our view that the economy is recovering slowly".

However, he added that "we will have to wait a while before growth picks up".
