Bank 'will wait' on base rate and QE changes

Bank 'will wait' on base rate and QE changes
//
The Bank of England will probably not announce any alterations to the base rate or the quantitative easing (QE) programme later today, one expert has predicted.

According to Vicky Redwood of Capital Economics, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is likely to reveal at midday that both are remaining unchanged this month.

She said that the MPC "will want to see how the recovery is faring" before deciding whether or not to reintroduce QE, which was put on hold last month and has resulted in £200 billion being spent on asset purchases so far.

This could take "another three to six months" she added, noting that the Bank will want to wait until inflation has peaked and is beginning to fall.

And Ms Redwood remarked that it will be even longer before the base rate - which is currently set at 0.5 per cent - is changed, forecasting that it will remain at the present level for "at least" the rest of 2010.

This could encourage people to invest their money in the stock market, rather than relying on a savings account.
