According to Brendan Barber: "Employment levels have remained high despite the recent economic turbulence and are nowhere near the dark days of 1992, when nearly 3m people were unemployed."
He added that it was unlikely that jobless levels would reach the peak achieved during the last recession in the 1990s, reported the Financial Times.
The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics are expected to show that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in the UK has experienced its biggest rise in 16 years.
Around 5,000 jobs have been lost following the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the single biggest loss since the failure of MG Rover in 2005.
Energy provider E.ON has also announced it is to cut 400 jobs in the UK.
