Now could be the ideal time to take advantage of some stock market training as fears grow that two million people in the UK could be out of work by Christmas.

The gloomy forecast came from David Blanchflower, a member of the Bank of England's rate-setting committee, reports the Times.

According to Vicky Redwood of Capital Economics, the employment outlook is even worse.

"We expect the measure to rise by a total of 1.5 million to around 3 million by the end of 2010," she commented.

Scotland will be among the hardest hit areas of the country.

Although Scottish unemployment is currently below the UK average of 5.7 per cent, experts believe that is likely to change in the foreseeable future.

Richard Harris, director of the Centre for Public Policy commented: "Scotland is going to experience a much bigger jobs decline than expected."
