Staff axed as housing market declines

Property search website Rightmove is laying off 20 per cent of its staff as the housing market continues to falter.

The company claims that the cuts to its 300-strong workforce will save £5 million annually, the Telegraph reports.

Rightmove said they were the first redundancies it had made due to the housing market decline and said everyone affected had been given a month's notice.

Last month, the company said the housing sector was "on its knees".

House sales in the UK have fallen by 53 per cent over the last year, according to the latest statistics from HM Revenue & Customs.

The BBC reports the new figures, which show that 59,000 homes were sold in September.

In the same month last year, the figure was 126,000.

Furthermore, sales have fallen by 62 per cent since the 154,000 peak in December 2006.

Mortgage lenders including Nationwide and Halifax have said prices are 12 per cent lower than they were a year ago.
