RBS currently employs around 170,000 people around the world, 100,000 of which are employed within the UK.
Around 1,000 of the job cuts are expected to affect UK employees, reports the Times.
The development brings the total number of UK jobs lost this week to 16,000.
Sources within the banking sector claimed the bank was simply responding to market condition and stressed that the cuts were unrelated to the government's stake.
One source commented: "Everyone is doing this. You could say RBS has been a bit late."
The job losses could be controversial as the bank is one of several which the government is partially nationalising.
