According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), around 11,300 homes were repossessed by lenders during the third quarter of 2008, compared to 10,100 in the previous quarter.
Michael Coogan, the director general of the CML, commented: "Looking ahead, conditions in the wider economy suggest a worsening picture for mortgage arrears, however carefully lenders handle their treatment of borrowers in difficulty."
The new data comes after recent figures from the Ministry of Justice which showed that the number of home possession orders filed in England and Wales during the three months to the end of September were just over 29,500 24 per cent higher than last year, reports the Associated Press.
In its report, the CML forecasts that as many as 45,000 people will lose their homes this year, the highest number for 13 years.
