The news could mean more people are persuaded to attend a free stock market seminar.
Brendan Barber, the general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said that those people losing there jobs are the "blameless victims" of the global economic downturn.
"As well as more support to get back into work, unemployed people need more immediate financial support to help them cope with life on the dole." he said.
Mr Barber also called for the redundancy pay tax-free limit to be increased from £30,000 to £50,000.
Unions believe that unemployment in the UK has reached six per cent for the first time in nearly a decade.
Senior managers are also not safe from the axe, the Management Consultancies Association has claimed.
The association estimates that around 360,000 management jobs will go by the year 2010.
