Banco Santander 'to axe 1,900 jobs'

Banking giant Banco Santander, the owner of Abbey, Bradford & Bingley and Alliance & Leicester, has announced it plans to axe 1,900 jobs this year, news that may make more workers in the financial sector consider attending a free stock market seminar.

The job cuts come after two of the company's 2008 acquisitions made it the UK's largest lender in terms of deposits.

Linda Ralph, general secretary of Advance Union, which represents around 10,000 Santander Employees in the UK, said: "We knew there would be fall-out.

"They've told us there won't be many more job cuts and hopefully this is most of the business overlap now dealt with."

In related news, graduate jobs hunters are increasingly shunning jobs in the financial sector in favour of 'safe' jobs in law and the civil service, it has emerged.

The head of Cambridge University's careers service, Gordon Chesterman, said that job hunters are becoming more and more concerned about the security of jobs in the City, reports The Independent.ADNFCR-1681-ID-18962092-ADNFCR
