Russia cuts off gas supply to Europe
//
States of emergency have been declared across Europe after Russia cut all supplies of gas to Ukraine, news that could have ramifications for stock markets across the continent.

Jose Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, said Russia and the Ukraine were guilty of taking the European Union's (EU) gas supply hostage.

"If Ukraine is trying to be closer to the European Union, it should not create problems when it comes to the supply of gas to the EU," he commented.

Yesterday (January 7th), a total of 12 countries did not receive any gas supplies from Russia at all: Austria, Bulgaria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bosnia, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey. France, Italy, Germany and Poland.

The EU issued Russia with a 24-hour deadline to restore gas supplies.
