RBS 'could axe 2,300 jobs'

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Group has announced it could axe two per cent of its local workforce, a move that could affect around 2,300 people.

RBS said the job cuts would not affect customer-facing staff, reports Reuters.

Alan Dickinson, RBS' UK chief executive, commented: "We will be consulting with our recognised trade union Unite and our employees throughout. We fully agree with Unite that we must keep compulsory redundancies to a minimum and we will."

Previously, RBS has cut around 3,950 jobs since August 2007.

At a meeting of MPs and former bank executives, members of the Unite trade union gathered to express their anger at having their jobs put on the line.

In related news, former deputy prime minister John Prescott has launched an online campaign to prevent RBS executives from receiving bonuses.

Mr Prescott has started an online petition and a Facebook campaign to oppose what he describes as "raw capitalism".ADNFCR-1681-ID-19019314-ADNFCR
