Visteon UK - a maker of vehicle components such as car interiors - has three plants in the country at Basildon, Belfast and Enfield.
The group also includes UK-based customer service and technology centres which are not affected by the move.
James Tucker and John Hansen of accountancy firm KPMG have been appointed as administrators.
Visteon chairman and chief executive Donald Stebbins said the UK plant has incurred heavy losses, despite extensive restructuring efforts, leaving "no alternative" but to file for bankruptcy.
He commented: "Visteon is committed to taking decisive actions in view of the current challenging operating environment to protect the long-term viability of the business."
Yesterday (March 31st), workers at Visteon's Belfast plant staged a sit-in in protest following the news.
