The Danish firm is to close its plant on the Isle of Wight, which will result in 450 employees being made redundant, with the remainder of the cuts being made across northern Europe.
"If the expected lay-offs are carried out, Vestas will still have substantial excess capacity in northern Europe compared with the current local market prospects," the business said in a statement.
However, the decision has been met with criticism by Robin Oakley of Greenpeace, who blamed the government for not doing more to "remove the obstacles" to faster development of wind farms.
The announcement comes following the news that Lloyds Banking Group is to shed almost 1,000 workers, with those based on Merseyside set to be included in the restructuring.
