The FTSE 100 has rallied to a gain of nearly two per cent during stock market trading this afternoon in London.

According to Bloomberg, the market had risen 1.99 per cent at 14:13 BST today (May 6th), taking it to 4,423.19 points.

As a result, the market has extended its four-month high, with financial firms - led by Standard Chartered which climbed by ten per cent - heading the index.

Legal & General and Aviva also climbed, adding 6.83 per cent and 7.33 per cent respectively, while HSBC, Thomas Cook and British Airways were also among the 82 companies that saw their share price increase.

However, mining business Antofagasta slid during the afternoon session, shedding 5.81 per cent to 607.5p per share.

The climbs have come despite renewed fears over the economy, with the National Institute for Economic and Social Research warning today that the current recession will be the deepest for 70 years.ADNFCR-1681-ID-19155838-ADNFCR
