NIESR report indicates that worst of recession is over

Signs have been recorded that the worst period of the economic downturn is over, something that may have implications for people who are interested in entering stock market trading.

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) has released a report showing that output rose in the UK during April and May.

Commenting on the prospects for the economy, Howard Archer, chief European and UK economist at IHS Global Insight, remarked: "Certainly, there's no denying that the worst of the recession is over."

However, he added that although the situation in the UK may be starting to pick up, the country is still "a very long way from sustainable, reasonable growth".

Mr Archer explained that due to the large contraction that was seen at the end of 2008, it is likely that the recent upturn could only be a "technical bounce".

The NIESR report stated that March was the trough of the recession, with output increasing in the subsequent months.
