CBI: Growth will be

With the worst of the contractions in the economy over, modest growth will be seen early next year, one industry body has predicted.

The latest forecast from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) states that gross domestic product will "flatten out" late in 2009 and the first two quarters of 2010 will bring growth of 0.1 per cent and 0.3 per cent.

Richard Lambert, director general of the group, said that improvements will be "slow and gradual" and warned that some commentators have been getting "carried away" with recent positive reports.

However, he added: "The harshest period of the recession looks to be behind us, the economy is stabilising - and this should continue."

Those thinking of investing in stock in UK companies may wish to take note of the CBI forecast and Mr Lambert's advice.

Last week, figures from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research revealed that UK output rose during April and May, taken by many as a positive sign.
