Steelmaker Corus is to cut a further 2,000 jobs at its steel plants in the UK, something that may result in those who have lost their jobs looking for ways to earn extra money.

The move, which has yet to be announced by the firm but has been confirmed by local MP Elliot Morley, will affect employees at the company's plants in Rotherham and Scunthorpe.

Community Union described the news as "devastating", with general secretary Michael Leahy noting that the body now has "real concerns" for the future of the British steel industry.

"Corus need to decide if they really are trying to be fit for the future or just fit for the scrapheap," he remarked, adding that the government "must" step in to resolve the issue "before it's too late".

The move brings total job cuts at Corus - which is Europe's second-largest steel producer - to approximately 4,500 this year.ADNFCR-1681-ID-19236494-ADNFCR
