The index was up 0.68 per cent - or 28.37 points - to 4,234.53 points at 14:36 BST, Reuters reports.
Mining company Kazakhmys led the market, with its shares increasing 4.82 per cent to 620p, followed by Xstrata, Rio Tinto, Vedanta Resources and Antofagasta, which rose by between 3.8 per cent and 4.6 per cent.
Supermarket chains Morrison's and Tesco also climbed - along with BSkyB and Lloyds TSB Group - while Tullow Oil added 2.31 per cent to jump to 907.5p and Royal Dutch Shell also increased.
Despite this, some food-related companies saw their shares decrease, with Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's and Associated British Foods all dropping in afternoon trading.
Yesterday many indexes around the world ended stock market trading lower, led by falls in Asia and the US.
