The FTSE 100 has risen during the morning session of stock market trading today on the back of strong financial results from US companies.

At 09:02 BST the index was up 38.87 points - or 0.9 per cent - to 4277.55 points, Reuters reports.

Energy firms were among those to climb during morning trading, with Tullow Oil rising 2.5 per cent and Cairn Energy, Royal Dutch Shell, BP and BG Group also seeing their share prices rise.

Banks - including HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group and Barclays - also rose, while there were also strong performances by companies in the mining sector, with shares Xstrata, Lonmin, Fresnillo, Eurasian Natural Resources and Kazakhmys all increasing.

BT was one of the firms to decline, with a report in the Financial Times suggesting that the company's retirement plan may come under scrutiny from the pensions regulator causing its shares to declined 0.7 per cent.

Intel and Goldman Sachs are among the companies that have announced their earnings to Wall Street so far this week.
