The index was up 0.4 per cent to 4,569.33 points at 08:59 BST, Reuters reports, with Royal Dutch Shell shares climbing by the same amount.
BP and BG Group added 0.2 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively, while in the mining sector there were increases for Lonmin - whose rating was upgraded to 'buy' by Citigroup - Randgold Resources and Kazakhmys.
BT was the strongest performer, however, with the release of better-than-expected financial results for its first quarter resulting in its share price climbing by over 13 per cent.
Market strategist Joshua Raymond explained that the FTSE 100 has now risen in 13 of the last 14 days.
"We have seen investors looking to bargain hunt within the mining sector, which had fallen seven per cent over the last few days," he remarked.
