According to Reuters, the index was up 7.06 points at 09:30 BST, with energy businesses among those benefiting.
There were jumps of as much as 1.4 per cent for Cairn Energy, Royal Dutch Shell, Tullow Oil, BP and BG Group as the FTSE edged higher to 5,086.33 points.
Market expert Joshua Raymond noted that there has been "a bit of hesitation" among some traders, who have been reluctant to come back to the market after the declines of the past few days.
Gains on the FTSE were limited by falls among companies in the financial sector, as Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group and Standard Chartered dropped by between 0.8 per cent and 2.4 per cent.
