Ryanair 'may stop expansion project'

Ryanair has warned it may halt its expansion programme due to stalling negotiations with Boeing.

The budget airline is looking to purchase new planes from the manufacturer, but chief executive Michael O'Leary said there has been "little progress" in talks with the company.

"If we cannot invest our surplus cash efficiently in new aircraft, then we should distribute it to shareholders," he remarked.

The firm revealed that its adjusted profit after tax climbed by 80 per cent to €387 million (£349.5 million) in the six months to the end of September, while passenger numbers jumped by 15 per cent to 36.4 million.

However, it experienced a two per cent decline in revenue - which dropped to €1.76 billion - and Mr O'Leary observed that there is "no point in continuing to grow rapidly in a declining yield environment".

Shares in Ryanair were priced at $27.27 (£16.67) on the NASDAQ stock market at the close of trading on Friday (October 30th).
