Gains from mining firms and Spanish communications giant Telefonica have helped shares rise during stock market trading this morning (February 26th).

By 08:08 GMT, the index was 0.7 per cent higher on 1,004.11 points, reversing some of the losses recorded on Thursday.

Telefonica added 1.8 per cent after its results for 2009 met expectations and it issued modest targets for 2010.

And gains in metal prices helped mining companies to edge higher, with Rio Tinto, Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Lonmin adding as much as 2.5 per cent.

There were also rises on the FTSE 100 in London, where the index was up 0.81 per cent thanks to surges in Serco, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton shares.

However, the increases on financial markets are unlikely to be sustained, one expert told the news agency.

"The worry is that the economy will double dip, though we've got confirmation all round that interest rates will stay low," said Bernard McAlinden of NCB Stockbrokers, adding that markets are "probably going to have trouble making new highs".
