The London Stock Exchange Group has revealed activity dropped last month when compared to the previous April.

Across the group's equity markets, the daily average traded was £7.7 billion, a two per cent increase on last year.

However, the typical number of trades made each day marked a 24 per cent drop, standing at 802,118.

The stock exchange analysis found a decrease of eight per cent year on year for the average daily value traded on its UK equity order book.

Meanwhile, the average daily number of Italian equities trades was 237,784 in April, a drop of 23 per cent when compared to the same month in 2009.

Despite declines in activity in some areas, the London Stock Exchange Group said: "Total value traded in international equities increased 63 per cent on April 2009 to £14.6 billion, while the average daily value traded was also up 63 per cent year on year, totalling £731 million."

The stock exchange recently welcomed leading Indian private sector oil and gas company Essar Energy to its Main Market.
