The leading index on the UK stock exchange has risen this morning (September 6th).

According to Reuters, the FTSE 100 has increased partly due to a better-than-expected US jobs report on Friday.

The FTSE was up 18.29 points - at 5,446.44 - following its near-four-month closing high on Friday at 5,428.15 after a sixth consecutive rise.

One of the big movers was Cable & Wireless Worldwide which added seven per cent, reaching a seven-week high.

Moreover, a report in the Independent on Sunday revealed that Singapore's SingTel had been in touch with bankers to consider a possible bid for the telecoms company.

Richard Hunter, head of UK Equities at Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers, said it looks as though the mergers and acquisitions theme is continuing.

This morning's rise mirrored that of an early 0.3 per cent increase on Friday, 14.63 points at 5385.67, partly down to gains from miners and energy firms.
