The FTSE 100 increased by 0.3 per cent around midday today (December 9th), it has been reported.

According to Bloomberg, the leading index on the British stock exchange was up 19.12 points to 5,813.65 at 12:19 GMT after positive results today for mining companies and metal prices.

One of the increases came for BG Group Plc, which added 2.5 per cent after announcing it is set to experience low costs in some of its Brazilian fields.

London-based David Jones, chief market strategist at IG Index, pointed out the metal prices were resuming their recent rise, adding: "The financial sector is also putting weight behind the index."

But there was negative news for the HMV Group as it paced declining shares following its announcement that its first-half loss increased to £31.3 million due to a lower demand in UK and Ireland stores.

This comes after a boost for the FTSE 100 came earlier this week when Tesco experienced a 2.4 per cent rise.
