Sterling down 'to 3-month low vs dollar'

Forex traders have mainly stayed away from the pound today (December 21st) as it fell to a three-month low against the dollar.

Sterling dropped by 0.3 per cent versus its US counterpart to stand at to $1.5453, its weakest since September, Reuters reports.

This came after data revealed a record public borrowing high, which led to concerns about whether the government will be able to reach its deficit reduction aim.

What's more, comments by Liberal Democrat business secretary Vince Cable had a negative effect on the pound, according to the news provider.

Mr Cable allegedly said he could leave his post and "bring the government down" if they "push me too far".

Earlier this morning, sterling was down slightly against the US tender by 25 pips at $1.5513, meaning it was around flat on the day.

In addition, gilts futures had decreased because of the increased UK public sector borrowing in November.
