The FTSE 100 index has risen by 2.2 per cent this morning (January 4th), it has been reported.

According to Bloomberg, the leading index on the British stock exchange gained 132.29 to stand at 6,032.23, increasing its nine per cent rally seen in 2010.

Oil traded at its highest price in 27 months and there were positives for BP and Royal Dutch Shell, while the Royal Bank of Scotland also had a good morning.

The financial organisation gained 5.1 per cent at 41.06 pence, with Exane analyst Ian Gordon stating it is finally time to purchase stock again and upgraded the shares to "outperform" from "neutral".

Other banks on the up were Barclays, which put on 3.6 per cent to 271.1 pence, while mining company Anglo American was boosted by 3.5 per cent to 3,453.5 pence.

This comes after the FTSE 100 index rose by just 0.1 per cent on New Year's Eve morning.
