The FTSE 100 has risen by 1.2 per cent this afternoon (January 11th) to complete a first increase in four days.

According to Bloomberg, the largest index on the British stock exchange made advances as of 14:31 GMT of 68.69 to 6,024.99.

HSBC Holdings and Barclays had positive results after brokerages advised purchasing shares of the financial organisations.

The former was up by 2.5 per cent to stand at 689.3 pence after Citigroup upgraded shares from buy to hold, but Barclays achieved a bigger rise of five per cent to 290.4 pence.

ARM also soared with an increase of 6.2 per cent to be at 494 pence - its highest level since 2001.

This comes after the FTSE 100 shed 0.4 per cent yesterday afternoon to record its third consecutive day of losses.

BP was among the companies to suffer due to an oil leak in a pumping station in Alaska, leading its shares to fall by 1.6 per cent.
