The FTSE 100 has suffered losses this afternoon (January 28th), those who trade on the stock exchange might be surprised to hear.

According to Bloomberg, the index decreased by 48.66 points, or 0.8 per cent, to reach 5,916.42 by 13:34 GMT.

A number of companies fell today, including TUI Travel, which was down by 3.1 per cent to 263.4 pence.

What's more, Diageo plummeted by two per cent to 1,220 pence as JP Morgan pointed out the world's largest distiller is "unattractive compared to beverage peers" and then downgraded the company to underweight from neutral.

In addition to this, UK consumer confidence fell by eight points, leading Ben Critchley, a sales trader at London-based IG Index, to state in an email: "Against a backdrop of rising inflation and falling confidence, it's becoming difficult to see where the optimism will emerge from."

This comes after the FTSE 100 index moved up by 0.4 per cent yesterday afternoon.
