The FTSE 100 has shed 0.4 per cent today (February 9th), it has been revealed.

According to Reuters, the leading index on the British stock exchange fell by 21.38 points to stand at 6,069.95, despite gaining 0.7 per cent yesterday to be at one of its highest positions since May.

But this was expected, according to Ben Barty-King, head of Options trading at ETX Capital, who said: "After Tuesday's leap to multi-year highs, a bit of a hangover today is inevitable, though without the ex-dividend factors the FTSE would be higher."

This comes after there was positive news for International Power, which put on 2.5 per cent, although the company was one of a number of organisations - including BP, Unilever and Royal Dutch Shell - to lose their payout attractions.

Yesterday saw BP's stock increase by 1.1 per cent up to 481.5 pence, plus shares in Marks & Spencer also advanced by one per cent, Bloomberg reported.
