Investors may have been able to earn extra money by putting their cash into British betting firm William Hill, which has seen its share value rise by nine per cent.

These gains were prompted by the release of a trading update showing first-quarter operating profit had increased thanks to demand for its online offering.

Ralph Topping, chief executive of the company, said in an official statement: "We have seen excellent growth across our business in the first quarter, enabling us to remain confident in our expectations for the full year."

While its retail revenues went up by eight per cent, it was on the web that it made the most advances, seeing net revenues rise by 26 per cent.

In addition to this online presence, there are 2,350 William Hill outlets in the UK and Ireland.

According to the BBC, the company earned more than £2 million in the space of an hour on the day of the Cheltenham Festival.
