European bourses gain despite wider concerns

There were improvements in several European stock markets as the bourses opened on Friday (May 13th), including a 0.4 per cent rise in the FTSE 100.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Germany's DAX and the French CAC-40 both increased by 0.6 per cent, despite the spectre of sovereign debt concerns and economic recovery worries hanging over the markets.

In comparison, there were losses of 1.3 per cent, 0.4 per cent and 0.2 per cent in the Nikkei, Hang Seng and Kospi respectively, while the Shanghai Composite rose slightly by 0.1 per cent.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Capital Spreads' Jonathan Sudaria described how analysts are unclear about the direction of equities.

He said: "Considering all the concerns about the strength of the global recovery and possible systemic risks from the European sovereign-debt crisis, traders may ease off the risk appetite."

The same news provider reported that the FTSE continued to grow as the day went on, achieving gains of 0.7 per cent. Strong economic figures released by Germany and France have been identified as the cause of the surge.
