Robin Ellison, a partner at law firm Pinsent Masons, was asked how people can increase their pension pots and he said it can sometimes be smart to go for higher returns with investments that hold more risk.
He remarked: "To increase the pension fund, there are several techniques – make sure that you are properly invested, not simply invested in cash, which is what happens if you do not make a decision."
Mr Ellison went on to stress that people must obviously join some form of pension scheme if they want to build up their retirement savings and from there it is all about the way they invest the capital and when they decide to start drawing money from the pot.
His comments follow research by Standard Life showing only 18 per cent of over-55s believe they can live on the state pension income of £140 per week.
