The FTSE 100 climbed 0.8 per cent on Tuesday (June 21st), with Whitbread leading the charge in stock market trading.

Bloomberg reported that the benchmark index reached 5,739 points by 09:10 BST, but noted that the confidence vote due to take place in Greece on Tuesday evening will have an impact on the markets.

Whitbread shares were up 76p to £15.61 after seeing a 9.2 per cent increase in total sales in the second quarter of the year.

The company owns Premier Inn and Costa among other hotels and restaurants and chief executive Andy Harrison stressed that the firm's performance has met expectations.

In an interim trading statement, he said: "We are confident that investing in our strong brand propositions of Premier Inn and Costa and introducing further value offers in restaurants will enable us to win market share."

Total like-for-like sales growth at the company stood at 1.7 per cent for the 13- week period.
