This is the view of Tom Cannavan, founder of wine-pages.com and an acclaimed critic, who explained that there are hundreds of varieties that will not have followed the top Bordeaux chateaux in continuing to grow in price.
In his opinion, it is important to seek good advice and know that you can always drink your investment if you feel like it.
Mr Cannavan added: "[A lot of] people have wine as part of their investment portfolio. For important individuals, corporations and pension plans, it has been an asset that has appreciated very well in recent years."
Last week, senior investment advisor at Bestinvest Adrian Lowcock suggested water could become a key commodity in the future due to growing population sizes and scarcity of fresh water supplies in certain countries.
