The Standard & Poor's 500 Index reached a three-week high in US stock market trading yesterday (June 28th), with stocks rising amid hopes that a Greek debt default will be avoided.

According to Bloomberg, the S&P 500 increased by 1.3 per cent to hit 1,296.67, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a 1.2 per cent rise to reach 12,188.69.

One of the biggest movers of the day was Nike, which rose ten per cent after the company easily surpassed quarterly projections for earnings and revenue.

"The rally is a continuation of the global growth story," said Sean Kraus, chief investment officer at Citizens Business Bank in California.

He told the news agency there is "relief around Greece", while the Nike results gave investors a positive indication of how the economy is "really doing on the consumer side".

The sporting goods manufacturer's net income rose to $594 million (£371.5 million) for its fiscal fourth quarter, up 14 per cent on the same period last year.
