When stock market trading stopped today (October 11th), the Nikkei 225 Index closed two per cent higher than the level it opened at.

The Topix Index also made gains, rising 1.8 per cent to 755.00, while the Nikkei benchmark advanced 168.06 points to close at 8,773.68.

One of the reasons behind the improvement in the Japanese stock market was the pledge from leaders in France and Germany that they would develop a plan to protect the region's banks by the end of the month.

Elsewhere in Asia, the MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose by 2.1 per cent as of 13:54 local time in Tokyo.

According to Bloomberg, for every stock that fell, six rose yesterday as investors exhibited greater confidence following the promises made by the European leaders.

Yesterday, the MSCI index closed 0.4 per cent higher as optimism started to improve.
