Following the EU summit at which leaders in the region met to find a solution to the eurozone debt issues, forex traders saw the euro hold steady against the greenback.

It was at $1.3891 following the meeting, which saw the EU approach an agreement on recapitalising banks.

A senior trader at a major bank in Japan told Reuters: "We're still waiting for the comprehensive crisis plan and divisions remain, but it looks like we're getting close to the deal on European Financial Stability Facility leveraging and bank recapitalisation."

Other individuals involved in FX trading suggested the 17-nation currency is likely to remain relatively strong until the next summit.

As well as holding firm against the dollar, the euro made gains of 0.6 per cent against the yen, reaching 105.936 yen.

Last week, Ian Stannard, London-based head of European currency strategy at Morgan Stanley, told Reuters that the euro had lowered by so much that any sign of progress at the summit would boost the currency.
